Damnation served as a warm-up for the planned coup de grâce of 2012, Resident Evil 6, the first major entry in the franchise’s video game series since 2009’s Resident Evil 5. That same month, the CGI film Resident Evil: Damnation was also released. In September came the live-action film Resident Evil: Retribution, which raked in a cool $42 million at the box office. That January saw the release of the critically successful 3DS title, Resident Evil: Revelations. For fans of horror franchise Resident Evil, it was also supposed to be the year of Resident Evil. 2012 was supposed to be the year of the Mayan apocalypse.
